Heebie-jeebies

The dogs weren’t the only ones feeling confined. I was confined to the apartment and the neighborhood by memories of my marriage, by places and possessions that triggered the memories. I was always being ambushed, hurtled back into the past. Time, supposedly the great panacea for sorrow, hadn’t helped. I wanted badly to be at peace.

My apartment was stuffed to the gunnels with books, paintings, photographs, papers, LPs, CDs, furnishings, and mementoes from both my life and my husband’s. Some people can rummage through their remnants with equanimity, but it gives me the heebie-jeebies. It’s the past I fear, not the future, as the saying goes. True, some of the remnants can be amusing. On a scrap of paper scrawled in pencil in handwriting I can’t identify, I found this:

A feminist lady named Kate

Was a mixture of love and hate

She could care for a guy

Be the delight of his eye

And happily leave him castrate
